There are a lot of brutal murders, and when the doctor who didn't want the job is forced to save the day, it's no surprise that he has to do it. When you're the only doctor left in the city after that, you do what you're told to do. There was a revolution in the city, and there was only one doctor left. You don't have to like Butler's metaphors to enjoy her stories, but if you dig a little deeper, you'll find one of sci-best fi's voices and one of the best Audible books for free. She was inspired by the prejudice she saw as a child, and her work looks at hierarchy, intolerance, and violence through the lens of science fiction.
